William Matthew “Pop” Stierle passed away peacefully on October 1, 2018 at his home in Hollywood, FL. Born in Philadelphia in 1928, he moved to Florida in 1955 “for a better life” with his wife and first two children. Devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, he enjoyed watching sports, fishing, photography, and helping anyone in need. Pop now joins his youngest son Edward in heaven.
Pop is survived by Rose, his wife of 70 years, 7 of his 8 children (Michael Galligan-Stierle, Therese Guttiere, Rosemarie Worton, William Stierle, Katherine Thomas, Thomas Stierle, and Patricia Stierle), along with their spouses, 22 grandchildren & their spouses, 16 great grandchildren, his sister, Jackie Olinger, and his brother, Adam Stierle.
Throughout his 90 years of life, Pop was engaged in many jobs including paperhanging, plastering, milk delivery, pretzel sales, and photography, but his most beloved job was working at Chaminade-Madonna. For over 25 years, Pop was an integral part of the Chaminade-Madonna family as a maintenance man, building contractor, school bus driver, and photography teacher. He loved teaching and encouraged his children, as well as his students, to embody hard work and self-reliance. Pop will be remembered for his philosophical witticisms, humor and willingness to always lend a helping hand to his family, friends and neighbors.
